Position Summary: Hourly non-exempt

The Outside Plant (OSP) Field Technician is responsible for splicing fiber optic cable in both outdoor and indoor settings; reading, creating and maintaining splicing schematics and diagrams; managing outside plant activities at an around assigned work sites; creating and maintaining accurate splicing and field notes; supporting project timelines and creating accurate redlines for assigned project changes.  The majority of tasks occur in the field and may require overtime, including evening, overnight and/or weekend work. Travel is required some may require overnight stays.  On-Call time may be required as well.

Essential Position Responsibilities

  • Splicing fiber optic cables including both loose-tube and ribbon cables.
  • Constructing Splice cases, including but not limited to: grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage and sealing, installing FDP and racks
  • OTDR and fiber scoping of fiber paths and testing as needed per customer requests
  • Meeting with current customers, making contacts with potential new customers for future jobs, and assist with design plans if needed.
  • Preparing and maintaining splicing records, schematics and diagrams.
  • Creating drawings and worksheets using Visio and similar software applications
  • Performing work in accordance with industry standards
  • Reading and following instructions and specifications
  • Managing and maintaining the scope of work on assigned projects
  • Adhering to safety standards and procedures
  • Preparing engineering field notes
  • Interpreting buried and aerial telecom facilities in records, on maps and in the field and recommending changes in running line or construction methodologies.
  • Participating in engineering, permitting and construction processes to support projects.
  • Performing routine route maintenance including recognizing and repairing route issues such as hand hole cleanup, sign placement.
  • Work on Boring/Directional Drilling crew when splice work is not available.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Senior Crew Lead

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience with fusion splicing both loose tube and ribbon fiber optic cables including the ability to place a mid-sheath splice.
  • Ability to read, interpret and understand build plans
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications
  • Ability to work with clients and/or customer contacts regarding best construction practices, practical facility entrances and surface restoration.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail and make good decisions based on information given.
  • Must have a valid Driver License
  • Must be approachable by customers and employees at all levels of the organization
